XGR: "Lawmakers expect to blow deadline on budget deal"

clarionledger.com: "It’s all but a forgone conclusion that legislative leaders negotiating a multibillion-dollar spending plan for the state will miss Saturday’s 8 p.m. deadline to present a deal."

Lawmakers appear to be at impasse on Miss. budget - Legislature - SunHerald.com: "Lawmakers can't agree on how much money to spend for mental health, public education and other key programs, and Mississippi House and Senate leaders likely won't meet Saturday's deadline to file a compromise, lawmakers said Friday."

STATEMENT OF GOV. BARBOUR ON BUDGET TALKS

“The House position on the budget is to ignore reality. Mississippi is experiencing 10 percent unemployment, high gas prices and a slowly recovering economy. The House is spending too much - $500 million more than the state’s revenue. Revenue for FY 2012 will be about $4.975 billion, and the House wants to spend $500 million more than that. They want to spend all of the federal funds as well as reserves that should carry the state through several years of this challenging economy. The Senate has presented a proposal that funds MAEP at the same level as this year – no cuts. If Mississippi families planned their budgets like the House has done for the state, they would soon be bankrupt.
